You will often see the term ITEM used in computer based testing and assessment, it generally means a a question, or sometimes a task. It can be expressed in lots of ways from a closed multiple choice type question to an open ended essay type question.
We have attempted to create a classification scheme for types of item below
We do not claim there to be any great science in this, or that this is an authoritative definition that excludes all others. Rather it is an attempt to distil experience and knowledge in to a usable classification scheme.
Typically in the case of many of these items you see that they are composed of four elements: Stem, Key, Distractor, Response

In the pages that follow we will look at the different types of ITEM from the ‘traditional’ and very well established multiple choice, multiple response and true/false items, through those which make use of the technology such as HOT-SPOT and modeling, to the open-ended items types of short answer and the now more widely emerging essay marking items.
|
 |
We have applied a simple classification scheme to categorise the item types in to four basic types
