In this section and the pages that follow we are going to look at the benefits and costs of Computer Based Assessment. In particular at why do it, how to do it, what some of the important issues you need to consider are and finally at the nature of the electronic test. But remember computer based assessment is not just about tests (in their various forms), it is also about the collection, recording, monitoring and management of on line portfolio’s - and these are discussed in more detail on the course-work pages.
There are any number of types of simple multiple-choice, self-assessment tests that are relatively easy for a tutor or a trainer to implement. These rely on the user having little or no knowledge of such technicalities as HTML, systems or hardware. They enable a set of questions of ITEMS to be established which give fairly instantaneous feedback to the candidate.
You can use web authoring software such as NETOBJECTS (used to develop these pages), AUTHORWARE (a sophisticated package from macromedia) and many other tools at varying costs and capability.
These simplest forms of assessment will provide just the answers with no other feedback to the candidate and can be written simply and quickly in these packages
Once the questions have been designed and written, they can then be made available for access through a web browser.
However there is an obvious big issue with these simple self-assessment tests. How do you ensure the discipline of candidates not to simply click the mouse button until the right answer is obtained?
There are a number of ‘low technology’ ways to address this including delaying the supply of the correct answer, or ensuring the system does not release the answer to any one other than a supervisor.
