Some options and ideas to be included in any consideration of marking

Computer Based marking

  • Set rules when you design questions
  • Answers pre set, and there is a rubric
  • Controlled by software package
  • Immediate feedback, at end of test or post test
  • Corrective scoring
  • Acts against guessing
  • Applies a negative score to incorrect answers
  • or a guess correction formula is applied
  • Very contentious issues
  • Is guessing a skill?
  • Should you warn candidates?

Computer assisted marking

  • Tend to be a mix of questions
  • Software analyses the responses ad gives the marker feedback
  • Multiple markers
  • Other issues the same as for ‘traditional CBT items’

Human marking

  • Marking can also be done on screen or
  • You could use a printout of responses
  • DOes one marker mark the Whole paper
  • or just Parts of paper
  • Multiple marking is also possible as the marks and the candidates response s are stored separately on the systems.
  • Re-marking (sample or full)
  • How do you collect the marks?
  • Can you use system to test rules and rubrics
  • All the issues of who does the marking, standardising etc.

Reporting and review

  • When do you feedback
  • How do you review the marking
  • Where do you store the results
  • What are the options from the software for analysing the responses
