The initial reaction is that using a computer must make the tests easier in some way. The evidence says no, numerous studies indicate that the use of the computer does not effect the outcome of the assessment. What is not being measured is Keyboard or Mouse skills.

However the look and feel of the screen is extremely important. As is the ability to navigate around the questions, taking them in the order and at the pace that suits the candidate. By using software that isolates the application from the other facilities on the desktop, none of the tools within the computer (such as spell checkers, web browsers, calculators etc.) can be used to help or the candidate unless specifically designed to.

Computer based tests are not the same as paper tests, they offer much greater freedom in the design and delivery of the assessment
