Remember - One size does not fit all and it’s never as easy as the salesman tells you.

There are many ways of

  • implementing computer based testing and assessment,
  • using it, and
  • many packages you can purchase.

You will need to work carefully through, how it will be implemented, what you want to use the system for, what you want to get out of it. Like all software the hard work is determining your requirements.

There are a number of approaches you can take

Develop for yourself - design, write and implement your own system. There are a number of packages around such as Macromedia’s Authorware which will allow you to develop questions.

Mix and match - this involves either using a package or supplier to develop the questions and then devise your own method of delivery and marking, or visa versa.

Buy-in the whole thing - again there are many suppliers in the marketplace willing and eager to sell you ‘the complete package’

Use an examining body or external agency - increasingly as the ,marketplace becomes more sophisticated, we will see a growth in the suppliers either selling a service for commercial gain or providing one as part of their accreditation to deliver qualifications

Some of these suppliers are discussed on the following pages :

But the key to all this is

Work out your requirements?

  • why are you doing it, what you hope to achieve?
  • what are your objectives?
  • what are the scope and constraints under which you will have to deliver the assessments?
  • what are the time scales under which you must operate?
  • how much can you spend in time and money?
  • what are the risks?
