There are two types of assessment ‘criteria referenced’ and ‘norm referenced’
|

|
- Criteria Referenced
- is based on explicit criteria and targets
- answers the question: does candidate have the necessary mastery?
- pass level defined in advance
|
|
|
 |
 |
|
- Norm Referenced
- where the results of all assessments are used to establish a ranked order of candidates
- works on a standards set by controlling the percentage of candidates at a grade
|
|
|
 |
 |
|
And of course there are all sorts of shades of grey in between.
|

|
Fulfills three functions
- Diagnostic - identifying strengths and weaknesses of candidate being assessed
- Formative - providing feedback to candidates and teachers/tutors on progress within a course of study
- Summative - formal performance measurement at end of course of study
