There are two types of assessment ‘criteria referenced’ and ‘norm referenced’

  • Criteria Referenced
    • is based on explicit criteria and targets
    • answers the question: does candidate have the necessary mastery?
    • pass level defined in advance
  • Norm Referenced
    • where the results of all assessments are used to establish a ranked order of candidates
    • works on a standards set by controlling the percentage of candidates at a grade

And of course there are all sorts of shades of grey in between.

 

Fulfills three functions

    • Diagnostic - identifying strengths and weaknesses of candidate being assessed
    • Formative - providing feedback to candidates and teachers/tutors on progress within a course of study
    • Summative - formal performance measurement at end of course of study
